Sharp announces 5,000 job cuts worldwide

The Japanese electronics group Sharp said Thursday the elimination of 5,000 jobs worldwide by the end of March 2013 in an attempt to restore profitability battered by the slump in LCD market.

Sharp also announced a heavy net loss of 138.4 billion yen (1.4 billion euros) in the first quarter of fiscal year 2012-2013, nearly three times worse than that experienced during the same period of 2011 - 2012, and worsened its already bleak forecasts for the entire year.
